Again I endeavour to follow the Via Appia and end up in a field of vines. Ok, Google Maps did say there was no vehicle route but walking appeared to be possible. It wasn't!
The modern highway follows the original VA route from Latina to Terracina. No fun for cycling and following the Mediterranean coastline made good sense.
The Cathedral of San Cesareo in Terracino is impressive and the Christian church incorporates the original Roman temple remains. Great piece of conservation and the Roman columns and capitals easily identified. Adjoining, the Pallazzo Venditti incorporates an archway over the Via Appia ancient road.
Legend says the city was founded by refugees from Sparta. It was a departure point by sea to Jerusalem.
There is a special atmosphere in the ancient city center.
