Cycling with panniers is mostly impossible off the main highway over the Apennines from Beneventon leading towards Bari. Via Ignatias? running parallel with the highway at an early stage of the climb is a non starter unless you are on foot.
Nothing much happens and conditions feel depressed sadly. The unexpected amount of rubbish on the roadsides is an eyesore.

Sad to say, but the roadside litter only gets worse when you reach the Balkans.
